Accidentally Unfollowed My Crush Then Followed Him Again Embarrassed

This is Why I Unfollowed You on Instagram (And why y'all shouldn't intendance)

Final week I managed to make someone completely lose their mind, just by deciding I didn't want to follow them on Instagram whatsoever more than.

We're talking full-on proper name-calling and freaking out, as the person accused me of beingness a "kid" (I know you are, only what am I?!), told me to "abound upwardly and go a life" (Because obsessively tracking your Instagram followers and flipping out every fourth dimension yous lose 1 is the very definition of life-having maturity, evidently. Now I know why I don't feel similar an adult yet!), and finished with a triumphant, "And then I'M going to unfollow YOU now, as well!" Which honestly made me sorry, because now someone who screams at me and calls me names won't exist commenting on my photos: shame!

This mail service isn't directed at that particular person, by the fashion, just so we're clear. I mean, I know I used the word "you lot" in the title, but the fact is, sometimes I unfollow people on Instagram. I do it, you do information technology – nosotros all do it, don't we? Otherwise anybody would merely follow EVERYONE, and imagine how long it would take you to scroll through your Instagram feed every twenty-four hours?

Sometimes I unfollow people on Instagram. I do it, you exercise it – nosotros all do information technology, don't we?

As it happens, I don't really remember what information technology was that fabricated me decide to unfollow that particular person on that particular day, just I do know information technology wouldn't have been anything personal, considering it never is. I hateful, I'yard assuming their behemothic bluster at me probably wasn't personal either, actually – as flattering as it is to remember that some people are THAT invested in seeing photos of my canis familiaris that they'll fly into a rage at the very idea of existence unfollowed, I'm but not that of import. The likelihood is that the person was just having a Actually bad solar day, and I got the brunt of it.

It did get me thinking, though, virtually the politics that surround following and unfollowing people on social media, and the reasons why people do it. I suspect one of the reasons my mannerly Instagram friend was then enraged by my unfollow is that she probably believes in the whole "follow for follow" thing: and then if you lot follow me, I'thousand contractually obliged to follow you dorsum, and if I unfollow yous I've broken some sacred constabulary of the internet or something.

A lot of people think like that, but I'm not one of them. Honestly, I think the great matter almost social media is that it can be whatsoever yous want it to be. You can follow whoever you want. You tin can mail service whatsoever you lot want. And part of that freedom is that you can as well unfollow whoever you desire, too. Sure, it sometimes stings if you notice that someone you similar isn't following you whatsoever more, merely information technology'southward rarely personal, is information technology? I hateful, it'south not that they Hate y'all and desire you to know it: most of the time it merely means that you don't happen to postal service the kind of things that person is interested in seeing right now. It doesn't mean that what you're posting isn't good, or isn't interesting AT ALL, to ANYONE: information technology'south just non the right fit. And that'southward OK.

the neat thing about social media is that it can exist any you want information technology to exist. You can follow whoever you desire. You can post any you want. And part of that freedom is that y'all can as well unfollow whoever you want, likewise.

To reiterate: this post isn't directed at whatever i person, and I didn't write information technology in order to instruct people how to brand sure their Instagram accounts see my strict standards: I honestly believe that y'all should apply Instagram (or any social media) however you like, and only have that not everyone is going to want to follow it, merely as YOU don't follow everyone else's Instagram/Twitter/Facebook account either. So this is just a listing of my personal pet peeves, basically: and everyone loves a proficient peeve now and and then , don't they?

With that lengthy caveat out of the fashion, here are some of the reasons I tend to unfollow people on Instagram…

Forever Amber on Instagram

(Oh, hey, it'due south my Instagram feed again! Let's all follow information technology, shall we?)

01.
You lot're obsessed with something I'grand not remotely interested in

Sometimes yous'll start post-obit someone because y'all honey their fashion photos, or their flatlays, or whatever… just and then, all of a sudden, they take up running, and all of their photos are now gym selfies, or close-ups of the stats on their treadmill, and, let me tell you, in that location's almost nothing more than irksome than someone who'southward just started training for a marathon, seriously. (Unless, of course, you're as well preparation for a marathon, in which case, crawly…)

In this kind of situation, I might hang around for a while, to see if the stuff I was originally interested in makes a comeback, but, if it doesn't, and I don't know you personally, I'yard out. It'south nothing personal, and you obviously accept every right to alter up your content equally much as you like, it'due south just that if information technology isn't what I signed up for, I'm probably non going to keep following it, just to be polite.

02.
You post inspirational quotes

Guys, I Detest inspirational quotes: HATE THEM. All those photos of sunsets with some banal proverb superimposed on them, as if putting text on a photo magically makes it profound?  Hate that. And I really, really hate that the Cyberspace is becoming and so over-run with these things: they're like the LOLCATS of 2015, except LOLCATS were actually funny, and inspirational messages are more often than not just trite cliches. I detest seeing them on Facebook and Twitter, merely I really, actually hate them on Instagram, because, to me, Instagram is a photograph-sharing app: its purpose is to share personal photos – and so, either photos that you've taken, or photos that you're in.

Obviously you might not see information technology that way, and like I said, that's absurd: I'm not in charge of the internets, then if you see Instagram equally a place to share endless inspirational messages, you exercise you – the fact that I don't like it is MY issue, non yours; it's 1 of the reasons I might unfollow you, but it'south not a reason for you to change the way y'all use Instagram.

03.
You post photos that aren't yours

I follow people on Instagram because I'm interested in THEM. If you lot constantly post screenshots from websites, photos of celebrities, stock images, or anything else you lot didn't take/doesn't have you lot in it, I'k out. (You also might want to double-check that you accept permission to share those photos, because taking other people's images can go you into trouble…)

04.
All of your photos were taken in the nighttime

Because Instagram is a photo-sharing app, some people think information technology should only be used to share the very best photos you have. I DON'T think that, for the record: I like Instagram because of the "behind the scenes" expect at people's lives it gives me – the little moments that would otherwise go unrecorded. Sometimes those moments don't brand for the best photos, though, and that's fine by me – I don't simply follow pro-photographers, and I don't unfollow people who post the odd blurry shot that still captured something important to them. With that said, if EVERY photo you post was taken in the nighttime, from very far away, and I can't fifty-fifty see what it's supposed to exist, I'm not going to think, "I'1000 glad they shared this," I'1000 just going to think, "What even IS information technology? And what fabricated them look at it and recall, "Yup, that belongs on Instagram!"?

05.
You photobomb my feed

It's neat that you lot're enjoying your vacation, seriously, but the 200 photos you uploaded, all in a row , meant that my Instagram feed is at present basically a shrine to YOU and yous alone, considering I'thousand going to have to scroll past all 200 photos if I want to see anything else at all. Over again, I recollect this kind of thing belongs on Facebook, where you lot can upload the images to an album and then people can choose whether they want to run across them all.  On Instagram, though, people don't have that selection – they HAVE to scroll past every single one of your near-identical holiday snaps, if they desire to see the residuum of their feed: why postal service 50 shots of the aforementioned thing when you lot tin only choose the best one, and permit people move on?

(I have literally seen people postal service up to 100 photos in a row on Instagram, seriously. And they have all been slightly dissimilar angles of the same affair. )

06.
Selfies. Too many selfies.

Now, I have to concur my hand up to posting the occasional selfie, but then once more, I don't mind the occasional selfie – especially if the person has mad makeup skillz that I tin can admire. But with some people, information technology's literally only one selfie after some other, to the point where you first to know their confront better than your own. If it reaches the point where I wait in the mirror and am surprised  non to see your confront looking back at me, considering I've seen so many shut-up photos of information technology now that it's THAT familiar to me, there volition no longer be a reason to really follow you – and so I probably won't.
